Celtic Institute of North America
The Celtic Institute of North America is a community of scholars dedicated to bringing you the most complete Celtic studies curriculum available on this side of the Atlantic. Whether you are interested in learning a Celtic language, studying ancient Celtic cultures, or exploring the music, folklore, arts, and traditions of Ireland, Scotland, the Isle of Man, Wales, Cornwall, or Brittany, the Celtic Institute has something for you.
Most of our instructors hold doctoral or masters’ degrees in Celtic studies or a related field from such institutions as Harvard University, the University of Toronto, the University of Oxford, and the University of Aberdeen. A full directory of current faculty can be found here.
Many of our faculty are also available for speaking engagements or guest lectures. If you would like to invite one of our instructors to give a presentation at your campus, bookstore, Celtic festival, or other venue, please e-mail us at info@celtic-institute.org.
We offer one-, two-, and three-day seminars on a variety of topics in the field of Celtic studies. During the summer months, we also offer five-day workshops and intensive language programs. Our current course catalog can be found here.
As our program expands, we intend to offer instruction in all areas of Celtic studies, including:
- Languages and linguistics
- Literature
- Folklore and mythology
- History
- Archaeology
- Music and Dance
- Storytelling
- Manuscripts and palaeography
Please feel free to write us at info@celtic-institute.org if you have any questions about our programs or suggestions for new course offerings.
Most of the Institute’s courses are taught in Berkeley Springs, a resort town located in the mountains of West Virginia’s eastern panhandle. Only two hours by car from Washington, D.C. and Baltimore, Maryland, Berkeley Springs offers a wide variety of attractions, including spas and natural mineral baths, fine restaurants, art galleries, antique shops, and beautiful scenery. Nearby state parks and resorts offer a range of activities, including swimming, hiking, and cross-country skiing.
Driving directions to Berkeley Springs can be found here. The Celtic Institute may be able to provide transportation between Baltimore’s Thurgood Marshall BWI airport and Berkeley Springs on Friday and Sunday afternoons for a small charge. Write us at info@celtic-institute.org for further details.
Berkeley Springs has a number of hotels, motels, and B&Bs priced for any budget; many of these are located within a fifteen-minute walk from the Institute. Further information about accommodation in Berkeley Springs is available here.
